doTerra Lavender, Pain Management After Surgery

Once again, I have another miraculous testamony in the use of… “LAVENDER OIL”

I  had just undergone surgery on March 23, 2012. To say the least, once the  anesthesia wore off, I was experiencing enormous amounts of pain. My surgeon prescribed, Hydrocodone/APAP 7.5mg./500mg., this is a typical pain medication prescribed by many doctors. Basically this drug is a compound  of Codine and Caffine. It was early evening when I took my first pill, as the drug started to take effect, I became extremely nauseatated and dizzy. my eyes could not focus. I thought great, now I can sleep my way through this pain, in spite of feeling nauseous. Not really, after about an hour I became very nervous and hyper, these symptoms were induced by the content of caffeine in the pill. Yes, I was no longer in pain, but I felt terrible. I thought to myself, these side effects just might be worse than the pain itself. After hours of feeling exhausted and irritable, I finally fell asleep. I woke up at two o’clock in the morning in excruciating pain, I decided to try the pain meds again. I felt desperate, all I wanted to do was sleep. After taking the second pill, I experienced the same effects as I had described earlier. I was so wired from the meds that I was up until 6am.

Since I wasn’t able to sleep,I started searching the web for articles about lavender and its uses for pain management after surgery. It all made sense to me, because I  had been using doTerra Lavender for insomnia, and yes it has been working for me. I read article after article until I came across this particular one.  This article convinced me to try using my doTerra Lavender Oil for pain instead of taking another dose of the the prescribed pain meds…

Lavender Oil For Pain Relief Print E-mail
Lavender oil has been popular since ancient times. Lavender oil was used extensively on the battlefield during both World Wars when medical supplies became scarce, to prevent infection and as a pain reliever. Soldiers suffering from the pain of their wounds would be administered lavender oil to ease the pain and often to kill the bacteria in the wound. Lavender oil would be applied directly to the wound itself.Lavender oil is one of the most popular essential oils in the world due to its magical aroma and wonderful qualities widely utilized in skin care, cosmetics, aromatherapy, flavor and medicine industries. A French chemist , Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, began his research into the healing powers of essential oils after burning his hand in his laboratory and immersing it in lavender oil and being impressed by how quickly the burn healed. Lavender oil has many uses; it is a powerful antiseptic containing more than 200 compounds that are active against fungi, viruses and other microbes..Pain:The oil has such a variety of practical uses and one area of special interest is the use of lavender oil for chronic pain patients who generally experience sleepless nights due to pain. The pain creates in the patient, sleep deprivation, which serves to aggravate the pain as well as lowering the body’s ability to fend off other infections and disease processes. When rehabilitation is started the patient is often tired and irritable due to the loss of sleep and the pain cycle is exacerbated. One older method of helping the pain patient to sleep is to take a cotton ball and drop a few drops of essential lavender oil onto the cotton ball and insert it between the pillowcase and the pillow. The heat and pressure from the patient’s head releases the oil and for many patients the oil helps them sleep and relieves anxiety. Today with the advanced technologies of gel matrix the oil is combined with extra virgin olive oil and the lavender and olive oil are absorbed into the gel patch which can then be worn by the patient releasing the oils for up to 24 hours. Other oils can be mixed with the lavender oil to help the chronic pain patient. It may also help to relieve pain from tension headache when breathed in as vapor.I found this artical to be the answer to my prayers. I unbound my compression bandages and proceeded to apply the doTerra Lavender to the entire area, the area felt hot and inflamed to touch. After I rewrapped myself, I then applied the lavender to the bottom of my feet, temples, the back of my neck and placed a few drops in the palms of my hands and rubbed them together and inhaled the lovely fragrance of the lavender. Within minutes I became relaxed, I no longer felt the intense pain and pressure from my surgery, I drifted off to sleep.

When  I awoke, I was relaxed, but  still experiencing pain in the operated area. I applied the lavender once again to the entire area, “Voila” pain gone! Throughout the day I topically applied the lavender every three hours, I had amazing results. I even took a three hour nap in the middle of the day, which for me is almost unheard of. The bottom line is…instead of reaching for those addictive pain killers, try using what nature has bestowed upon us. I am contemplating sharing this testimony with my surgeon, but he would probably think I was crazy. On second thought I will share my experience with him, what harm could it do if I were to plant this seed in his head. I feel it is extremely important for us to take charge of our bodies and choose safer methods to treat illnesses and pain.

As far as essential oils go, find Essential Oils that are in their purest form. This is the reason I highly recommend,  doTerra Essential Oils.  doTerra’s Therapeutic-Grade Oils are 100% pure natural aromatic compounds carefully extracted from plants. They do not contain fillers or artificial ingredients that would dilute their active qualities.
